At 16:00 on October 18th, the 2021 "Famous Teachers' Lecture Hall" series of lectures co-sponsored by the School of Mathematical Sciences and the Institute of Applied System Analysis of Jiangsu University started on the cloud as scheduled. The guest speaker invited in this issue is Professor Tao Tang, a well-known computational mathematician, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and president of Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College. The report was hosted by Zhitao Zhang, Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences, and was broadcast live online through the Tencent conference, which attracted more than 150 teachers and students from inside and outside the school to watch it online.

At the beginning of the lecture, on behalf of the teachers and students of our college, Dean Zhitao Zhang extended a warm welcome to Academician Tao Tang, and briefly introduced Academician Tang’s research direction and academic achievements. Later, Academician Tang Tao gave a wonderful academic report on the topic of "Pi and Computational Mathematics". The ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter of the pi is a constant. It is recorded in detail in the ancient Greek Euclid's "The Original Geometry", and the ancient Chinese arithmetic books "Zhou Pi Suan Jing" and "Nine Chapters Arithmetic". The calculation of pi has attracted wide attention from mathematicians since ancient times, and its course has witnessed the development of different branches of mathematics. In the report, Academician Tang introduced geometric algorithms, algebraic algorithms and iterative algorithms for calculating pi, and elaborated on the advantages and applications of modern computational mathematics with the development of computer technology and algorithms.

Academician Tang’s report is clear and easy-to-understand, which gives teachers and students a deeper understanding of computational mathematics, and helps to stimulate college students’ interest in learning mathematics. He also called on and encouraged the teachers and students participating in the conference to actively participate in the communication of mathematics culture, and jointly promote the learning and development of mathematics.

After the report meeting, Academician Tang gave patient and meticulous answers to the questions that everyone was concerned about. Dean Zhitao Zhang made a concluding speech for this lecture.
